Your oral hygiene is closely linked to your general health and poor oral hygiene can lead to more serious health problems such as cardiovascular problems.

Good oral hygiene can also help prevent dental problems and loss of teeth.

Poor oral hygiene causes plaque and tartar build up. Everyone is susceptible to plaque, it is a natural occurrence; however, if it is left on your teeth it forms tartar and as tartar builds, plaque bacteria clings to it, allowing a ripe breeding ground for bacteria to thrive in.

Tartar build up if not treated can lead to gum disease called periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a progressive gum disease that causes the bone supporting the tooth to be lost and can result in teeth becoming loose or being lost.

Healthy gums are pale pink and they do not bleed on brushing.

We recommend that you have at least two dental cleans a year either conducted by a dentist or a hygienist to prevent gum disease and to maintain good dental health.

Why do we recommend a specialist hygienist visit?

Even with the best dental hygiene programme at home you cannot always get the clean that is needed to maintain good dental health.

Tartar build-up cannot be removed by brushing or flossing it has to be removed by a specialised dental clean.

It is important that you have regular in-house dental cleans to remove tartar and prevent gum disease and to maintain good dental health.

To ensure that you maintain healthy gums we recommend that you have a specialised hygienist examination and clean at least twice yearly.

What does a Specialised Hygiene Clean involve?

During your visit our hygienist will examine your gums to check if they are healthy and if there are any areas that you may be missing with your tooth brush or floss, any areas of redness or inflammation and any tartar build up.

They will also conduct a thorough clean of your teeth to remove tartar that you cannot remove or plaque that you cannot reach with your own daily dental hygiene care.

During your visit the hygienist will also explain to you how to look after your gums and show you any areas that need particular attention.

At our Atlanta clinic we have two dedicated dental hygienists who will look after you. Annmarie Bergin (RDH) and Charlene Reardon (RDH).

Annmarie and Charlene have been looking after our clients for many years and have a great reputation for ensuring that they maintain excellent oral hygiene and dental health.

They will work with you to get your oral hygiene up to scratch and explain to you what you need to do and how you can maintain a good oral hygiene programme at home in conjunction with your in-house clinic visits.

So at your dental hygienist visit you will be provided with a:

  • detailed examination of your gums
  • specialised cleaning of your gums
  • polishing of your teeth
  • demonstration of how to effectively clean your teeth and gums and areas that need particular attention
  • personalised oral hygiene programme for you
